Men who dedicate their lives to sports, or who like a fitness lifestyle, need an extra supply of vitamins daily, which is why multivitamin supplements are essential. Similarly, a person who is on a diet or has an exhausting lifestyle can turn to vitamins to meet the needs of the body. If you are over 40, your body and organism require certain nutrients that are lost with age. Take a look at these special supplements for this stage of your life.
Walking down the vitamin aisle at your local store or pharmacy can be overwhelming. With so many different types on the market, it’s hard to know which ones could help you and your loved ones achieve your health and wellness goals.

“In a perfect world, all the vitamins and minerals would come from a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fortified foods,” says Dr. Rebecca Moran, a family physician at Banner Health Clinic. “But realistically, there are certain situations in which additional vitamins and minerals are recommended.”
Here you can find a quick guide on which vitamins to take depending on your age.

How to take
For full foundational whole-body health support take 4 capsules daily. For best results take 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening, with or without food. And whenever you need an upgrade to fill a nutritional gap in your diet, simply up your dose to 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening.

Babies
Vitamin D
Although breast milk is the ideal food for newborns, it does not contain enough essential nutrients, such as vitamin D and iron. Dr. Moran recommends that babies who are fed only breast milk get 400 IU of vitamin D from the first days of life. This habit should be continued until they are weaned until drink at least a quarter of whole milk a day. “But remember that whole milk should not be used until the baby is one year old,” says Dr. Moran.
For formula-fed babies, Dr. Moran notes that most formula-fed babies in the US include vitamin D in their formulations; thus, babies who drink at least 32 ounces of infant formula a day do not need to take supplements.
Iron
Iron is necessary for healthy brain and blood cell development. Babies need the mineral to avoid the effects of iron deficiency, including anemia. Babies whose diet is based, partially or completely, on breast milk should begin taking iron supplements at a dose of 1 mg/kg per day in liquid form from four months of age. Formula-based babies do not need to take iron supplements because the formula already contains iron.
Kids
The dietary guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the United States Department of Agriculture do not recommend taking supplements that exceed what is allowed by the dietary recommendations for healthy children older than one year who eat a balanced diet. However, Dr. Moran indicates that there are certain circumstances, such as vegetarian or vegan diets and certain medical conditions, in which supplements might be necessary. Check with your child’s pediatrician or healthcare provider if you need a supplement.
Between 20 and 30 years old
“In the US, a well-balanced diet should provide all the vitamins the body needs, for healthy men and women alike,” says Dr. Moran. “With that said, your doctor can help you assess where you might be deficient and recommend supplemental minerals and vitamins.”

Pregnant or while breastfeeding
Women should take prenatal vitamins about three months before conceiving and continue until breastfeeding is over. Make sure the multivitamin includes folic acid, as it has been shown to reduce fetal neurological defects.
During menstruation
Women are at increased risk of iron deficiency anemia due to menstruation, especially if their periods are heavy. These women may need to take iron supplements if they don’t get enough of it in their diets.
Vegan and paleo diets
For those who follow plant-based diets, vitamin B12 is a good option, as it is commonly found in fish, meat, poultry, eggs, and milk.
Older adults (over 55)
If you eat a consistent and well-balanced diet, including foods fortified with vitamin D, you will not need to take vitamins. Research shows that vitamin D and calcium are essential for bone health, but they are better acquired through lifestyle and diet than through supplements.
Although there are no specific vitamin supplements recommended for healthy adults, Dr. Moran indicates that most multivitamins are safe. He also cautions against taking high doses of vitamin supplements and recommends talking to your GP.

Gastric bypass
Patients who have undergone gastric bypass or who develop pernicious anemia should take vitamin B12 supplements, as the gastrointestinal tract of these patients does not absorb it well.
Lack of iron
If your doctor has diagnosed you with iron deficiency, it is advisable to take iron supplements.
Osteoporosis
Eat healthy, exercise, and optimize your calcium and vitamin D intake.
Alcoholics
At any age, if you are an alcoholic, you can develop a deficiency in folic acid and vitamins B1 and B6.
Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet is the key to good health. Dr. Moran advises speaking with your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any supplements. There are some medical conditions for which your doctor may have special recommendations.

Do men’s multivitamins really work?
A study that tracked the mental functioning and multivitamin use of 5,947 men for 12 years found that multivitamins did not reduce the risk for mental declines such as memory loss or slowed-down thinking. A study of 1,708 heart attack survivors who took a high-dose multivitamin or placebo for up to 55 months.
Are men’s vitamins necessary?
The Stance: No. Most people should skip the pills and focus on food instead. If you’re a healthy guy and have no major dietary restrictions, you don’t need a multivitamin. A pill containing 20 vitamins and minerals is never going to replicate the complex mixture of healthful compounds in whole foods.
