Teaching cursive writing to children is very complex. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here you will find a plan that starts at the beginning of teaching cursive. It is everything you need to know about cursive writing for beginners.

CURSIVE WRITING – START AT THE BEGINNING

Think about when kids start learning cursive. They may be in second or third grade or between 7 and 8 years old. Or, depending on the school and cursive writing curriculum, there may or may not be a plan to teach cursive writing.

Some teachers have to come up with cursive lesson plans on their own. Others follow an italic syllabus such as Zabner-Browser, Handwriting without Tears, or D’Nealian. Sometimes the school district allows a set number of weeks for cursive writing, and if a child misses days during that time frame, they miss the boat in learning a particular letter in cursive training.

In most cases, cursive is taught once and not covered again. Children may write their spelling words in italics or fill in journal entries in italics, but they are not required to do so. Usually, this is the only practice the student does to fine-tune her cursive handwriting.

The formation of the letters can be checked, but their accuracy is not scored, and the child does not have the opportunity to go back and correct the errors in letter formation. They may not even notice the teacher’s marks on a letter formation error.
