How to Move a Sofa

Whether you are moving home or just redecorating, moving around a soft can be a difficult task. Not only is it heavy, but it’s also bulky. But, with a little know-how, moving a sofa will be a lot easier. Here are some of the tips you need to know if you want to move a sofa.

Prepare it Properly

The first stage of the process is to get the couch ready for you to move. Look at the type of sofa you have. Sometimes, you will be able to unscrew the legs or arms. This will make getting the sofa around a tight squeeze a lot easier.

Depending on the type of couch, you might be able to deconstruct it further. If you have a sofa bed, you’ll need to remove the mattress. This will take away a lot of weight and make it a lot easier to maneuver. If you have a sectional couch, remove each part. If you need to take out screws, place them into a Ziploc bag. This will make sure that they don’t get lost.

If you are just moving it around the house, you probably don’t need to wrap it up with plastic. If you are moving home, or need to take it out a window, you should do this. You’ll need to use a stretch wrap. You might also need to use some old blankets to protect the armrests. Before you wrap the sofa, remove any pillows or cushions and place them to one side. This will reduce the weight of the couch. This video guides you through the process of shrink-wrapping a sofa.

Use a Dolly

A sofa is a heavy item. If you are going a short distance, you’ll be able to lift it with a friend. But if you need to go a long way, it’s a good idea to use a dolly. Before you do this, place a blanket over the armrest. Then, slowly tip the sofa on its side, lifting it vertically. You will usually need to recruit a friend to help you do this. Remember to lift with your knees rather than with your back.

Once you have tipped it vertically, you’ll need to run the end of the dolly under the sofa. Use tie-down straps to hold the sofa in place. Use a blanket or piece of cardboard under the straps, so they don’t damage the sofa. Before moving off, check that the couch is tightly secured. You don’t want the load to suddenly shift when you are lifting it.

Getting Through Tight Spaces

When you are moving a bulky item, one of the most common difficulties is how to get around a tight space. This is where having a friend to guide you can come in very handy. Getting around these areas will often take a bit of patience. You’ll need to be prepared to tilt it at an angle. You might need to try a few approaches to get around some corners.

Lifting the Couch Out a Window

Sometimes, though, the couch just won’t fit. In this case, you will need to get a little more creative. You might need to try lifting the sofa out the window. This can be done, but you’ll need to recruit the help of your friends. Have two people inside the house, lifting the sofa through the window frame. On the outside of the house, you’ll need to have two people collect it.

Getting up Stairs

If you are facing a set of stairs, you won’t be able to use the furniture dolly. Bumping the couch up the stairs can damage them. Instead, you will need to get a friend to help you lift the sofa up the stairs. When doing this, place the strongest person on the base. They will be responsible for carrying the bulk of the weight. The person at the top will be responsible for steering. The key to doing this properly is communicating effectively.

Conclusion
