What are the Emirates staff travel benefits?

Emirates staff travel

Emirates staff travel information

Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, offers various staff travel benefits for its employees. Keep in mind that these policies may change over time, so it’s advisable to check with the airline directly or refer to their official employee handbook for the most up-to-date information. Here are some general aspects of Emirates staff travel benefits that were applicable as of my last update:

  1. Free or Discounted Flights: Employees typically enjoy free or heavily discounted flights on Emirates as well as other partner airlines. The extent of the discount may vary based on factors such as the employee’s position, length of service, and other criteria.
  2. Family and Friends Benefits: Employees often have the option to extend travel benefits to their family members and friends, allowing them to also benefit from reduced fare or free travel.
  3. Standby Travel: Staff travel is usually on a standby basis, meaning employees and their eligible companions can travel if there are available seats. However, this also means that plans may need to be flexible as priority is often given to revenue passengers.
  4. Priority Listing: Employees and their eligible travelers are typically listed in a priority order for standby travel, with certain categories of employees and their dependents having higher priority.
  5. Discounts on Accommodation: In addition to flight benefits, some airlines, including Emirates, may offer discounts on hotel accommodations for their employees and eligible companions.
  6. Cargo Benefits: Employees may also receive discounts or benefits when shipping cargo through the airline.

What are the Emirates staff travel benefits?

It’s important to note that the specific details of staff travel benefits can vary based on the employee’s role, length of service, and the airline’s policies. Additionally, airlines may update their employee benefits packages, so it’s recommended to contact the airline’s human resources department or refer to the latest employee handbook for the most accurate and current information.

All airlines provide free/concessional tickets to their staff and other family members. They also provide this facility to other airline employees which reciprocated. Emirates also provide these kinds of travel benefits to their employees and reciprocate with other airlines too.

These tickets can be used while the staff is on leave. You get 50% off and 90% off. You can fly anywhere you want even using other airlines and availing of the same fares but you must get back to base (Dubai) within your rest period prior to your next flight.

You’ll receive a tax-free salary plus a range of lifestyle and travel benefits, including air travel discounts with Emirates, as well as discounts on shopping, entertainment, dining and leisure services with the Emirates Platinum Card.

The travel benefits are as follows as of the time of writing (March 2024).

  • 1 annual leave ticket (confirmed)—completely free – for self, spouse and children. First 3 years of service, a ticket for declared hometown. Post that, free ticket for any Emirates destination. For some senior grades, freely upgraded to the next class, if available and if travel party does not have a child below 13 years.
  • Unlimited ID90 tickets (subject to load i.e. flight not being full) for yourself, your spouse and children. You pay full taxes and 10% of the standard IATA fare (which is higher than the market fare). Overall, works out to be around 30% of total fare (base + taxes) found in the open market, as a thumb rule.
  • Unlimited ID50 tickets (confirmed) – for self, spouse, and children. You pay full taxes and 50% of the standard IATA fare (which is higher than the market fare).
  • 1 SRC ticket (per year of continuous service after the first 3 years). This is subject to load and you pay only taxes, 0% on the base fare. It can be transferred to any passenger you wish.
  • 1 additional confirmed SRC per year of continuous service over X years (don’t recall how many years).
  • If you quit/retire after more than 15 years of continuous service, you get 1 subject to load and 1 confirmed SRC per year for life.
  • 2 subject to load ID90 tickets per year for your maid (above certain grade).
  • 2 subject to load ID90 and 2 confirmed ID50 for each of your parents, parents-in-law, and siblings per year.
  • 10 special tickets every year, which can be given to any other friend/relatives not listed above. These are confirmed buddy tickets, that are slightly cheaper than the market (maybe 10% discount) but are inventory controlled tightly. So you won’t find availability for the most popular routes during popular travel periods.
  • Maybe something more, that I can’t recall.

Emirates staff travel information and benefits?

  1. These are only available for full-time permanent staff. Not for temporary, contractual or consulting staff
  2. The benefits seem attractive on paper, but if you have a family with kids and can travel only during school holidays (peak travel periods), then the subject to load tickets are usually useless, as Emirates flights usually go completely full.
  3. The confirmed annual leave tickets are good. If you have kids though, you have to sacrifice the free upgrade to business class.
  4. The ID50 tickets and buddy tickets are pretty useless if most of your travel is to/from the Indian subcontinent or other popular destinations as these tickets are strictly inventory controlled based on forecast demand.

As an Emirates employee, you benefit from free or heavily discounted fares for yourself and your family. Emirates provides tickets to its staff on a standby basis, meaning you will fly if and when there is a free seat on the plane.

The fare cost depends on the route and the class of travel, but in general, it is very competitive.
On international routes, you can find up to 80% off or even more tickets, depending on the season and route.

Furthermore, you can find even more discounts if you are particularly flexible with dates and times.
Should you want to travel during peak season, it may be worth pre-booking your ticket to secure the best discounts.

What’s the discount that Emirates Airline employees get on tickets?

They get one annual leave ticket for self and family free. First 3 years of employment it’s to your home country.

Post 3 years it’s anywhere on the Emirates network. In addition to self and family unlimited discounted subject to availability tickets.

Emirates staff gets a 50% discount on tickets on the class (Economy, Business, First) they are entitled to as per the Grade. These are the confirmed tickets.

Staff can get 90% discounted tickets too but it is highly subjected to availability and has a fair chance of not getting to fly.

Worse is that the staff gets to know this at the last minute if it is a Yes or no.

As a former airline employee, I can attest that an ID90 ticket does not, in reality, amount to a 90% discount off the ticket price.

It is based on the highest unrestricted “full” fare, which translates to a much smaller discount off the lowest confirmed fare you could buy.

In return for the discount, you do not get a confirmed reservation, but rather are on standby status.

I never found it to be a particularly good deal as an airline employee.

Does air hostess have to be pretty?

ID90 is what would usually choose. The flip side to this discounted fair is that you get a seat on the flight.

Only if there is a seat available, and you will have to go to the airport with your luggage to know if you will get on the flight or not.

What is a staff ticket?

Staff travel is a benefit for (retired) airline employees, travel industry employees, their family members or close friends (often called “buddy passes”).

Staff travel tickets can be purchased at a fraction of the costs of a standard ticket, but are only granted if there are unsold seats available.

Do flight attendants have to wear makeup?

Female flight attendants for Virgin Atlantic will no longer be required to wear makeup on the job and will be given the choice to wear pants or a skirt, the airline announced.

As an airline, we have always stood out from the crowd and done things differently to the rest of the industry.

Do Emirates pilots get free flights?

Emirates Airlines currently has around 4,000 pilots covering over 100 nationalities.

The crew flies to 155 destinations in 83 counties across six continents.

Emirates Captains on the A380 and B777 fleets earn a total monthly tax-free salary of AED58,770.

Emirates staff travel information/benefits?

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airlines and Group, said that the aviation and travel sector had been particularly and severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which we feel affects our personal lives.

He explained in an internal memo to the company’s employees seen by “Al Khaleej” newspaper that he was “happy as he watched the group’s staff continue to serve customers even in the face of great challenges,” noting that he was “very grateful for the continuous support and dedication of the employees to their work.”

He added: “In the past few weeks and months, thanks in large part to the global vaccination campaign and the efforts of our leaders here in the UAE, we have seen a clear path toward opening up to recovery, as our iconic planes reunite people, fly to the most popular destinations around the world, and activity is back. Once again, to Dubai International Airport. Indeed, there is a distinct atmosphere of positivity and a return to normalcy.”

Do you have to be rich to travel the world? Here’s a TED talk about a guy who traveled the world without money, but how realistic is that for others?

As much as I would like to say yes and give myself a valid excuse for not traveling much, the answer is a resounding no.
A 65-year-old tea shop owner and his wife from Kochi, India, have traveled to 16 countries while owning only a tea shop.
And this is no fancy Starbucks, Cafe Coffee Day, etc.; this is your normal, usual chai-walla.
Yes, this.
Meet Vijayan, and his wife, Mohana.
How do they do this? By taking bank loans.
Using the loans to visit a new country and then repaying the loan for the next 3 years. And the cycle repeats. How do they repay the loan? By saving Rs. 300 every day. So in 3 years, they saved Rs. 3,28,500 (without calculating interest).

How does it feel to travel alone?

Though I didn’t plan on traveling alone but was compelled to do so, I had planned a trip to Leh, Ladakh, with friends. The discussions were done, the plan was made, routes decided, necessary purchases made, motorcycles readied, and everything was taken care of.

The plan was to ride 4 motorcycles from Bangalore to Leh. As the day of the journey started approaching, people started dropping out one by one. Each gives a different reason. The last and final person backed out on the day of the journey.
So, had to make a choice, whether to give up on the plan or attempt a solo ride to the Himalayas across the country on a 20-year-old motorcycle.

I decided, what the heck? Let me look at it; I’ve already applied those, leaving no point in backing out. I made a mental agreement: the moment the motorcycle gives up is when I will give up and head back.

Starting point, Mysore Infosys.

As it turned out, it never did for the next 26 days. I and I took my motorcycle a day at a time, picked a destination, and tried to make it. Almost always, we did.

The route took me across the country, Blore – Pune – Mumbai- Ahmedabad – Mt Abu- Udaipur- Jaipur- Amritsar- Chandigarh- Jammu- Srinagar- Kargil- Leh.
Everybody was surprised to see a 22-year-old guy traveling alone from Bangalore on a motorcycle almost as old as him.

By the time I reached Leh, I had already covered 4000kms, was tired, and fell sick as I didn’t expect AMS to set in. But the bike was in perfect condition, and I remembered our agreement. Kardungla Pass, the highest motorable road at 18380 feet, and the beautiful Pangong Lake are what I came for. Decided to make one final push.

The kid on the left. No backup crew and no company to rely on. Just a few biker friends who I had met on the way.
Soon after, the AMS started getting worse, and I had to head to lower altitudes, but the toughest road, Leh- Manali, was what I had to tackle to reach home. Crossing those flooded roads, no tarmac to insane traffic. I remember very less of the journey, but I just kept going. Reached Chandigarh, shipped the bike, and took a flight to Bangalore.

Emirates staff travel

Though I spent the next 7 days at a hospital recovering from losing over 12 kilos on the journey, I had the most memorable experience of my life. I met some amazing people on the way, from some in Punjab who took me to their home and offered me lassi to the amazing biker brotherhood who stopped to help any stranded biker on those routes to a couple of army fellows who offered me free lodging in Leh for a couple of days just because they saw my number plate, which belonged to their state.

It removed my inhibitions and fear of traveling alone. It’s a beautiful world out there, and you’ll meet some amazing and helpful people along the way.
Traveling alone is a way to get to know yourself in ways you never imagined.
After this, I’ve traveled 6 more times to the Himalayas, three of those solo. And I don’t think I’ll stop anytime soon 🙂 Cheers.

What are the perks of being a solo traveler?

1. Ultimate Freedom

Traveling alone makes you more flexible with time, your next destination, and your decisions. You team up with travel buddies you like the most and expand your travel plans. You are free to change your plans whenever you want to. You are free to sleep as long as you want to. You can hitchhike, hike, dance on the beach, and change your destination at the last minute without stress and compromises. When you travel, you are open to change, and you will welcome it with open arms. No more fitting into a group’s agenda. No more explanations or disappointing anyone. You follow rhythm, heart, and mind.

2. Speak To Strangers. Make New Friends

When we travel with companions, we tend to stick to that group of people, and even though we try our best to get to know new people, the dynamics and interactions will certainly not be as deep and fulfilling. When on the road, I’m more eager to chat with locals, meet travel buddies, team up with other travelers, and generally reach out more to socialize. It seems so natural. Traveling solo enables you to speak directly to some locals and stop being shy with people. This way, you can make new friends and gain valuable insider knowledge about wherever you are.

I met these 3 more solo travelers during my last solo trek in Oct 2015. After meeting for the rest of the journey to Delhi, we all were together. And we are in touch; we talk at least once a month.

3. Learn more about yourself. Discover yourself

Once you begin a solo journey to an unknown place, you get to know yourself much better. You are on your own. You start listening to your heart, and you can finally achieve some level of internal equilibrium and focus of mind. You start to discover yourself again – things you are capable of, afraid, or scared of. You face your fears, and you defeat them. There is no stress around, and you feel alive.

4. Experience New Things

When you travel solo, people are more open and direct with you. Thus, you can experience more new things than when traveling with someone. People will invite you home and welcome you warmly in their place. They will share everything they have with you, sometimes giving you more than they possess. You will notice their smile and small gestures you often ignore when traveling with someone else by your side. Emirates staff travel

5. Overcome your fears. Challenge your insecurities

What does not kill you makes you stronger, and that’s so true. When you are left alone, you start fighting for what matters to you. You overcome the fear of heights, darkness, spiders, or even new food. The more you travel, the less you fear. As long as you make regular solo trips, you will feel more confident each time, no matter your fear, which is also a good excuse to travel regularly.

You might end up going on that white-water rafting day trip or Paragliding – those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that you would never have done if you’d been in the comfort of your place and friends. Because hey, YOLO

Paragliding from Birbilling- World’s second highest Paragliding Take off point (altitude- 2480mtr)

White River rafting 🙂

6. Loneliness? What is that? Emirates staff travel

When traveling solo, you will never feel lonely. Once you get to any hostel or hotel, you will see plenty of solo travelers in the same boat. You all travel for the same reasons, miss home at some point, and want to experience new things. It is incredible to see how much you have in common with people you have not met. You get to know each other, make friends, and keep in touch. We meet again after some time in a different place, and you all laugh at all these awkward and unforgettable moments you shared.

Jumping: Jump and strangers became friends. We talk every day in the whatsapp group 🙂

7. Indulge in anything you want without being judged

Without a doubt, eating is one of the most enjoyable aspects of travel. Be it street food or in a restaurant. Once you start traveling solo, you also start appreciating food more and eating things that you would normally not eat at home. You become more adventurous with food. You can finally take in all the Thai pad thai, Italian pizza, Belgian macaroons, Rum Balls, and Chinese dumplings you find on your travels if you so desire without worrying about other people noticing. Emirates staff travel

My fav- is Rum Ball

8. Save Money

In most cases, traveling solo is cheaper than traveling with someone. Why? Nobody teases you with local delicacies, so it is easier to resist the temptation and spend less Money on food (my case). You are also more likely to buy fewer souvenirs and useless gadgets. More importantly, your travel companion might prefer the more convenient and expensive way of traveling, and it’s sometimes awkward to say, “Sorry, it’s too expensive for me.”

9. Gain Confidence

When you travel solo, you face various problems, make decisions and even take risks alone. All these situations will, without a doubt, make you stronger, braver, and much more confident. Being alone on the road is a great challenge, and as we know, the challenges make us grow stronger and wiser, not only as travelers but also as human beings. When traveling alone, you can learn many skills, such as time management and decision-making.

10. Zero Drama

How many times did you argue with your travel buddies? How many times did you have to meet them halfway? If things do not go well, the entire trip can be a miserable, drama-filled time you’d love to forget. There is no drama when you travel on your own. No argumentsNo fights.

To summarize, we should be confident to embark on a solo journey! For some people, it might be a tough decision and a weird feeling for the first days of a solo expedition, but at the end of the day, you will not regret it as it’s much more adventurous and challenging, and it shapes your personality and gives you enormous possibilities to test yourself.

Why do many Fly Emirates crew quit within 3 years of joining the airline? Emirates staff travel

People who have never been a crew member with Emirates will probably never understand why people resign from Emirates. They think, “How can someone resign from one of the best airlines in the world’?’. To many, being an Emirates cabin crew is a dream, so many would not understand why people would resign. I think no one would understand until they walked in their shoes.

Emirates has a very high turnover rate. They keep having tons and tons of cabin crew recruitment events around the world monthly. That is because so many crews leave every day. A friend of mine resigned from Emirates as a crew member last year. She told me that when she was doing her exit stuff at the bank, she was number 16 in line to close her bank account. So during that time and day, 15 other Emirates cabin crew were waiting in line to close their bank accounts. All because they were resigning. That was during that specific time and day. Crazy!

Now to the question of why a lot of EK crew resign within 3 years.

The crew that resigns from Emirates have one of these reasons or a mix of all: Emirates staff travel

  • Fatigue. The rosters the Emirates crew has are a lot. They keep having flights back to back and long hours. The rosters can sometimes be crazy. People are bound to get tired and feel they can’t do this anymore. Crazy sleeping patterns also affect them.
  • Homesickness. They are far away from friends and family. You are living in a country that is not your home country. At first, living in Dubai might be “wow” for some, but the “wow” factor wears off very quickly. Imagine every single day you work and then come home to no one. Yes, you share the accommodation with roommates, but they are not your family or friends like home. You are in a country and place that you are not used to. You start missing your home, people, and things you used to.
  • Loneliness. Even if many folks surround the crew, they often feel lonely. The Emirates crew share their accommodation with either one or two flatmates. Still, they feel lonely. Of course, they make new friends from their batch or around them, but feeling lonely can sometimes be too much. You start to feel lonely, and then the homesickness kicks in. That is when you keep thinking about home. You start to feel depressed and sad. After a long period of feeling this way then, you are bound to start thinking of resigning.
  • Rules. When you sign your Emirates cabin crew contract, you also sign up to follow 10000 rules. There are various strict rules the crew has to follow both on duty and off duty. For example, the female crew cannot have any male friends’ sleepovers at their house—the same for the male crew. For example: if the crew wishes to have family over to their accommodation, they must sign forms and approve them. It is regarding having family over to stay for an extended period. There is also a curfew in place for all crew. The strict rules can feel suffocating for some. For example, the crew can only have alcohol in their houses with a liquor license. If the company finds out the crew has alcohol in their accommodation without a liquor license, the crew is fired. Having all these rules makes the crew feel very controlled by the company. The crew feels like kids having a “big brother” always watching them, etc.
  • Working environment. Emirates cabin crew have no unions. If something happens, they have no safety net or no support from anyone. There is a lot of backstabbing happening among the crew. A lot of crew reporting each other. A lot of crew getting fired for silly reasons, etc. The crew feels they don’t have any support from the managers. For example: if a crew member ends up arguing with a passenger, then the passenger has the right to get that crew member fired. The crew has no voice. The airline will back up the passengers but not the crew. The service on board is very tough and strict. The passengers are very demanding on certain flights. When the crew has no voice, no support from managers, and has difficult passengers, then sometimes it feels like they are “modern day” enslaved people on board.
  • Roommates. The crew shares the accommodation with one or two other crew. The crew is not allowed to change accommodations until after they have completed their probation period. The probation period is 6 months. Then after they have completed their probation period, they have to request to change accommodation. This process is not easy and only happens slowly. I have a friend thatwhoted to change her accommodation because she was not unhappy with her roommate, and they were not getting along. It took her two years to get the change approved. Having bad roommates affects the crew a lot.
  • Fantasy. The crew has a picture of what their lives would be like before they join. They think this is a dream life and a dream job. They think the job is easy and breezy. They paint this picture and think it is a walk in a rosy garden. But when they arrive in Dubai, they will realize this was not what they had in mind. The job may be too demanding. The hours are too much. They can’t handle the stress and press. The rules are too much. They simply aren’t enjoying the job anymore, and this was not what they had in mind. So they do the job for 1–3 years and quit.
  • Other goals. Then we have a crew who resign because they feel this isn’t for them. They have different goals and plans than this. Initially, they planned to do this for app approximately a year, then go back home and continue with other stuff. Our crew took this job because they wanted to try it for one year and see how it was. They never intended to stay in the company for long. Some even do this as a fun thing for a short period and then resign.

These were some of the main reasons why the Emirates crew resigned within such a short period.

Can I buy a fully refundable Emirates business class ticket for lounge access and then cancel before I fly?

Yes, you may buy a fully refundable Emirates business class ticket. You may cancel it before you fly for a full refund. But once you have a boarding pass, a necessity to get through security, you become a passenger. Enjoy that martini that cost you $5,000..a brilliant idea and a splendid move. Remember that most lounges are “air side”, with a few exceptions (Virgin Atlantic at SFO). That means you have to go through security, which means you need a valid boarding pass.
