What are the benefits of working in Dubai even when you are paid a low salary?

Dubai is always a very interesting city. It is a land of great opportunities but also a city that tests you before making those opportunities available and visible to you. Every successful person I know in Dubai started their way from the bottom, usually with a very low salary, and climbed to the top, eventually passing through a massive learning, shaping, and self-development experience.

My first salary in Dubai was 3K AED, out of which 1500 AED was spent on Sharjah accommodation rent, 600 AED spent on monthly car lift service to get to work (center of Dubai) and back, leaving me with a generous 900 AED monthly budget for grocery/taxi and misc expenses.

It was hard. It was a survival year for me.
I was often tempted to leave and go back home where I could be comfortable and at least not hungry (since we are speaking honestly here).

However, every time I wanted to write that resignation letter, I was always stopped by my Big WHY voice. It kept saying: “Why did you come here? Are you going to leave as soon as the first barrier occurs on your way? Life could be way worse that this. Focus on being grateful”.

society of engineers in dubai

I did not come to Dubai to give up and leave because my first job experience was not ideal. I did not come for an ideal life to be handed over to me. I came for a better life, and I was going to make that happen by creating it because Dubai had chances that were available for me to grab. I knew I just needed time to reach them.
I stopped focusing on current setbacks and inconveniences.

I started thinking long-term, setting goals, and envisioning who I would become in 5,10,15 years. 13 years forward to where I am now, I was able to over-achieve my goals and turn all my visions into reality. If I had given up 13 years ago, I would never experience working with Dubai’s greatest business minds as their right hand, becoming a public speaker, entrepreneur, and coach, and creating a company that would get acquired by an MNC within the 1st year, meeting my wonderful husband and bunch of amazing friends.

I would never learn the Arabic language. I would never know what I am capable of if I was not forced to innovate, solve problems, and survive in this amazing city that challenges you at every step of your journey. I would only be able to help a portion of women worldwide create the careers of their dreams.

I would never be who I am today if not for My Great Dubai Experience, which started with a 3000 AED salary and a sharing accommodation in Sharjah and ended as a Top 101 Global Coaching Leader:) I believe all of this was “granted” to me because I passed the test.

What are the effects of alcoholism on society?

I will quote two examples:

Chinnamma, my domestic help in Bhubaneswar: The entire home and finances were managed by her. She learned how to open a bank account, start recurring deposits, deposit money in a bank, etc. She constructed a house in her hometown with the matured RD money and some loan from us.

She did not compromise on her children’s education. She admitted them to a good school. Now her daughter, after completing graduation, has a good job. Her son is studying for a diploma. She could save money for her daughter’s marriage and even purchase gold. Even without her husband’s help, she could do all those things.

Lakshmi, my domestic help in Vizag, earns as much as Chinnamma (if not more). She is the person who manages the finances in the house. She has only one daughter. She could not provide any education to her daughter. She could not save any money. She took a huge loan for her daughter’s marriage and is repaying it now.

Why is this difference?

Chinnamma’s husband is not an alcoholic. Whatever money is earned by both is spent for the family’s welfare. Lakshmi’s husband is an alcoholic. He spends all his earnings on drinking, and if that money is not enough, he grabs some of his wife’s earnings.

Alcoholism, in the case of a rich person, spoils the health of that person. In the case of a middle-class family, it spoils the mental peace and the financial position of the entire family. In the case of poor people, it has an impact on the financial as well as educational well-being of upcoming generations.

How can I contribute to society?

First, I’d like to thank the person asking the question. Not everyone wants to contribute to society; they expect what they want from society and do nothing about it.

There are many, many, many, and yet many ways to contribute to society. Listing a few points off the top of my mind

1. You could contribute to the city’s cleanliness or the protection of nature by participating in volunteer-driven programs (there are a dime-and-dozen of these!)

2. Knowledge is indeed power. You could teach people who need help to afford an education on various topics. They and you become proficient in whatever you teach in this process, so it’s a win-win!

3. Charity. We spend knowingly/unknowingly on things we do not need and waste a lot of money/ food. Donating money and food is worthwhile and gives you a sense of satisfaction.

society of engineers in dubai

4. Try to support people who are oppressed and discriminated against. Be it kids who go through bullies, women who go through harassment from their spouses or in-laws, or even teasing, be it poor people looked down upon by the so-called “higher class.” Stand up and speak out. Even a small effort of support is highly appreciated by people who are good at heart.

And many, many (did I say many? It’s worth saying it again. Many!) more ways you can contribute. You could contribute in your way to make someone smile, make someone’s life worth living, and make someone’s burden reduced to a great deal.

Appreciate your question and hope you contribute to society and get a lot of good wishes in return! 🙂

Do you think religion is required for your daily living?

In 2011, I made it official that I wouldn’t follow, believe or practice any religious format. Many people predicted gloom and doom for my life. Many said I would regret it badly in a few months as ‘god’ would curse me.

It has been 6 years since that day. Nothing has happened to me or affected my daily living. If anything – my life has improved, become better and more successful ever since I got rid of all those imaginary characters.

What is the impact of artificial intelligence on society?

Ah… small questions. This question won’t get more than 20 views, but I think I can explain this pretty well, so I’ll answer it.

Artificial intelligence will eventually erode much of our purpose as humans. Here’s why:

  • Humans evolved doing hard, physical labor. They pushed themselves to the limit for their tribes, running tirelessly after animals, caring for the wounded, and building.
  • The change to a less physical and more mental existence has come with a lot of conveniences but also, at the same time, a deep lack of purpose. Humans no longer strive to be faster runners or stronger builders. A lack of exercise is bad since exercise is the best natural cure for depression. (I put an article at the bottom for more research).

society of engineers in dubai

We’re still changing, but not fast enough to keep pace with technology. AI will be a massive change in how the world is run. Quite a few researchers believe that an AI will be able to do everything that a human can do… which makes us ask, “Then why are we here?”

Humans are not built to calculate endlessly. We’re also not built for a life of relaxation or paradise. From my experience, we are happiest when striving for a goal, not simply sitting back passively and letting an AI do everything for us. An AGI (or an AI that can do everything a human can) would void our purpose and our entire struggle through life.

There needs to be a cure for the apathy that comes with convenience. A great example of this apathy is the effects of the Las Vegas shootings: nothing has changed. Imagine a world where you don’t even need to think to accomplish things or feel pleasure. We do not need to run or exercise, and already, depression rates are increasing. No goals? No need to strive? A world with true AGI is a paradise… just not for us. society of engineers in dubai

Does social mobility benefit society?
Yes. Immensely so.

The bell curve. It is a simple fact people are not defined by their genes. While genetics help a lot, you still have people of all sorts of wits in all social groups. The unwashed masses produce as many potential geniuses as the small elite per population unit. If one million rich people produce one genius a generation, fifty million people on the other side of the scale produce fifty per generation.

In a society with high social mobility, perhaps half of those fifty potential geniuses will go on to achieve greatness, giving you 20–30 people who made great contributions to society in a generation (the rich kid, notwithstanding). In a society with low social mobility, the one with rich parents probably succeeded, alongside a few poor ones, giving you five such people total. society of engineers in dubai

Numbers are used for illustration. The great movers of society are one notch lower; society is most improved by a significant number of people who exceed expectations, not the few stellar overachievers who get all the glory. However, the logic applies nonetheless, a society with high social mobility will be able to unlock a far greater portion of its innate potential than a society with low social mobility ever could. It is why good social mobility is so important. It also creates a better and more liveable society as an added benefit.
