You can develop your skills and quickly learn how to illustrate Butterflies in just a few minutes!

The front wings are closer to the Butterfly’s head and are roughly triangular.

Step 2 – Add Back Wings

Proceed by drawing the outlines of two back wings of your Butterfly. Make sure to make them smaller. Now you have a general design of the wings of a butterfly.

The hind wings are closer to the tail and are fan-shaped or shell-shaped.

Step 3

Now it’s time to draw the body of a butterfly. Start by removing the central part: chest. Note that the front and back wings are attached to the thorax, so draw the thorax right in the middle where all the branches meet. Then add a small circle on top, the head, and the abdomen below the chest.

Step 4

Add two eyes to the Butterfly’s head and two antennae. Don’t bend the antennae too much. Now draw horizontal section dividers on the abdomen of your Butterfly. Your Butterfly is taking shape!

steps 5

Remember how we were talking about making the first outlines of the wings relatively light? In this step, you can use all of your pen pressure when drawing the final shapes of the Butterfly’s beautiful wings.

steps 6

This step brings some challenges. The best way to draw cells on the hind wings would be to start from the inside of the branches located by the abdomen. Second, make the large cell at the top. Add other cells afterward, and don’t try to be precise – all butterflies have slightly different patterns.

Step 7

Drawing the pattern on the front wings is a bit easier. There is a distinct large cell at the top and 3-4 horizontal ones. Don’t forget to add delicate veins to each cell.

step 8

Start to darken the space between the cells.

step 9

Finish drawing the wings of the Butterfly.

steps 10

Coloring can be done with pencils, watercolors, or inks. Sometimes the back wings are lighter, and the front wings are redder, but you can use any color you like if you’re not trying to draw a typical American Monarch butterfly.

Typically, the scales on the top of a butterfly’s wings are brightly colored, while the scales and underside have a camouflage pattern.

Don’t press too hard with the pencil for the first few steps. To start, use smooth, soft strokes.

Step 1:  Draw a long oval as a guide for the body of the Butterfly. The oval does not have to be perfect. It is just a guide.

Step 2:  Draw a small circle at the top of the oval as a guide for the Butterfly’s head.

Step 3:  Draw a triangle on each side of the body as a guide for the top of the Butterfly’s wings or front wings. Try to draw both sides similarly so that your drawing has symmetry. To form the front wings of the Butterfly, first, remove the top lines, then the sides, then the bottom lines to create triangles. You can also start with the top bars, do the bottom lines, and finish with the side. Whichever is easier for you.

Step 4:  Draw the bottom of the Butterfly’s wings or the back wings just below the top. The shape is similar to the letter U. It starts at the front wing corner and ends at the bottom of the Butterfly’s body. Draw, draw each side the same.

That’s it for the initial sketch! Press harder with the pencil to get a more defined sketch from this point on.

Step 5:  Draw a curved line inside the circle for the Butterfly’s head. Draw a few more lines inside for more detail.

Step 6:  Draw two semicircles on the top of the head for the Butterfly’s compound eyes.

Step 7:  Draw the top of the head and the antennae as two curved lines on the Butterfly’s head.

Step 8:  Use the oval as a guide to drawing the middle segment of the Butterfly’s body or thorax.

Step 9:  Use the bottom of the oval as a guide to drawing the Butterfly’s lower body or abdomen.

Step 10: Use the starting triangles as guides to draw the front wings of the Butterfly. Fold in the tops of the front wings for a more organic feel. Draw a series of curves and arcs for the sides of the Butterfly’s wings and fold the bottom a little. Remember to draw each side the same way to have a sense of symmetry.

Step 11: Use the U-shaped lines as guides to draw the back wings of the Butterfly. Draw a series of wavy lines along the edge for a more organic feel.

Butterfly Drawing Images Easy Steps and fast 2023

Step 12: Draw a series of lines inside the forewings for the veins. Start with a curved line at the top of the Butterfly’s wing, then draw the rest of the veins below. Pause the video while following along to remove the Butterfly’s wing’s veins accurately. Whatever you draw on one side of the Butterfly, be sure to draw it on the other side as well for an asymmetrical look.

Step 13: Draw a series of lines inside the back wings of the Butterfly for the veins. Start with a long U-shaped vein on each side, then draw the remaining veins attached below it.

Step 14 (Optional):  For a cleaner look, erase as many of the initial guidelines as you can. Don’t worry about deleting them all. It’s okay to leave some behind. Also, redraw any final sketch lines you accidentally erased.

Final Step (Optional):  Add some value throughout your Butterfly drawing for additional detail. It is the basic shape for most butterflies, so you can add different amounts of value to get a wide variety of patterns in butterflies. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. It’s always a good idea to use references when adding value for accuracy, especially with your Butterfly’s wing pattern. Your Butterfly can be a monarch, a blue morpho, or one of your designs! When designing your pattern, you can draw spots, dots, stripes, or anything else you like. Be creative! Some facts about butterflies.

There are almost 18,000 species of butterflies in the world. An adult butterfly has a brief life span of three to four weeks. Like the Monarch of North America, some butterflies, which migrate to a warmer climate, can live 7-8 months in a generation if you count a butterfly’s entire life cycle.

Monarch butterflies migrate to find warmer weather and are the only insects migrating an average of 2,500 miles to get away from the cold.

Here are some fun facts:

  • The butterfly wings are transparent;
  • They cannot fly if they are cold;
  • Butterflies taste with their feet;
  • They drink from mud puddles;
  • Butterflies live on an entirely liquid diet

The funniest Instruction videos to learn to paint are very easy and practical on creating Butterflies for your children without any experience.

It’s not too hard to understand why so many children AND adults are fascinated with butterflies. Their color and delicate beauty make them endlessly fun to look at.

Many internet tutorials for learning how to draw them, however, I found to be overly simple (as in wings with a few circles) or overly complex (complete monarchs with dozens of shapes).

This project is intended to land in the middle. The outline of the wings land on the center guides, to help students get started, and there are just enough shapes inside to give a realistic look, without getting forever lost in them.

TIP: Try challenging your students to layer crayon color to jazz up their background. You don’t have to use oil pastels to do it, pressing hard with crayons and laying down lots of waxy colors can look amazing too! Scroll down to see this lovely purple coloring option.

If you are more artistic, you can paint the stems and flowers directly onto the wall. Get your child involved if she is old enough to help with the artistry.

  1. Use your daughter’s own artwork to decorate the room.

Ask your daughter to draw individual pictures of her favorite things found in a garden. Flowers, butterflies, bees, and caterpillars are a few examples that come to mind. Transfer your child’s works of art onto her bed using iron-on transfer sheets.

This can be done by scanning the artwork into your computer and then printing it directly onto a transfer sheet. Next, iron the transfer onto a white piece of fabric and use fabric glue to attach the finished images to a large rectangle of fabric.

You should space the transfers approximately 1″ apart. Frame your child’s drawings by sewing on color-coordinated buttons and then stitch the large piece of fabric to a solid color comforter or quilt.

  1. Create tulip pockets on a plain colored pillow sham.

Tulip pockets can easily be created using polka dot fabric and then cutting out the shape of a tulip. Next, sew the tulips onto a plain pillow sham and then embellish them with ribbons, buttons, and bows for a truly custom look.

  1. Make a beautiful garden-style window treatment.

Use an ordinary white roller shade as a canvas for your garden. First, use a pencil to outline the floral shapes that you would like to appear on the window treatment. Next, paint the background area of the window shade green for contrast.

Do this using a foam brush and cost-effective acrylic paints. Finally, add color by filling your flower shapes in coordinating colors of paint. Add soft sheers to frame the window and add floral appliques to the sheers for your own customized look.

Cut out and glue felt flowers onto the corners of photo frames. Use floral artwork in your frames, or, for a more personalized look, frame more of your child’s own art. Your child will take real pride from having their own custom artwork prominently displayed as a part of their special room.

  1. Frame a round or oval mirror with a boa to create a mirror for your princess.

Find a child’s costume boa at a discount or crafts store. Use fabric glue or a hot glue gun to adhere the boa to the perimeter of the mirror.

  1. Make a unique desk or vanity by adhering pink sparkle fabric around a rectangular table.

The fabric can be stapled on by pleating the fabric around the outside of the table. Cover the tabletop with fabric and add a piece of glass.

Have your child make construction paper flowers, a cut-out princess crown and any other photos or drawings that she would like and then place them under the glass so that she can show off her own personal style.

  1. Use the sparkle fabric to cover a cork bulletin board.

First, cover an inexpensive bulletin board with the sparkle fabric by pulling the fabric tight around the edges and stapling into the back of the frame.

You can add 3-D homemade butterflies to the bulletin board for a more finished look. Have your child find photos of real butterflies on the internet and then print them out on matte photo paper.

Cut out the butterfly shapes and fold them so that their wings extend outward, bringing them to life. Pin the butterflies to your cork bulletin board to finish the design.

Any of these eight ideas, or even all of them, would be great cost-effective alternatives for creating a bedroom fit for a princess.
