Is Pathfinder: Kingmaker a decent game and worth the money to buy?

This game is my dreams come true.

I should put my answer in context. My all-time favorite game is Baldur’s Gate. My second all-time favorite game is Baldur’s Gate 2, and it’s followed by Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale. I love Dungeons and Dragons isometric RPGs. I even love The Temple of Elemental Evil, and that game’s an objective mess.

I will also say that I love Pathfinder. Pathfinder is my all-time favorite tabletop RPG. Before Pathfinder, I played D&D, and I’ve been playing D&D since my dad introduced it to me when I was 6.

Suffice to say – I am exactly the sort of person that this game would most appeal to. And oh my god it does.

I have not had this much fun playing a computer game since the first time I played Baldur’s Gate. I mean seriously. If I were to go to a group of people and say “Build my ideal video game,” this would be pretty close to it. The music is by my favorite video game composer – Inon Zur. The ruleset is my favorite ruleset. The story is based on the AP that most piqued my curiosity in the Pathfinder repertoire.

So I give this game a 10/10 glowing review. It might be my new favorite game. But I want to give that review with two substantial caveats:

The game is not perfect and the game is not for everyone.

This game is hard, and let me clarify what “hard” means. As I said, I love Pathfinder and I’ve been playing these sorts of games for years. I have literally written multiple guides to various Pathfinder tactics and people read them and share them a lot. I know the system very well.

This game kicks my ass.

Now, granted, I’m not playing on easy. I am playing one step above normal, and I don’t mean “challenging.” “Challenging” is harder than what I’m playing. There are two ways to increase difficulty in this game. One of the options I have set to “normal,” the other I have set to “strengthened” (regarding the monsters), and with these settings, I die all the time.

Most of this challenge is a very good challenge. It comes in the form of interesting monsters using interesting tactics or difficult puzzles that you need to sit down and solve. I love that stuff. That is everything I love about the Infinity Engine games, everything I love about Resident Evil, it’s everything I love about all my favorite games. Kingmaker respects the player. It doesn’t baby you or appeal to your need for instant gratification and validation, and that is so unbelievably refreshing I can’t describe it.

What is the best RPG to start playing right now, “Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire”, “Pathfinder: Kingmaker”, or “Divinity: Original Sin 2” if I want a compelling story, likable characters and gameplay that does not becomes a chore?

If you like quality, well-polished RPG with lots of depth in its character development, DOS2. The trade-off is it feels very restrictive during each chapter, as you can’t visit old areas and have to somewhat travel the set path.

If you want something like the PnP RPGs or the older ones like Baldur’s Gate or Neverwinter Nights, or simply a structured but flexible class system, Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Pathfinder is based on an upgraded DnD 3.5, and the game does an adequate job of translating it to a video game.

The downsides are it is also linear (but somewhat more open than DOS2), it can be buggy, the voice acting is inconsistent, and multi-classing is a risky venture unless you know what you’re doing. In fact, you kind of need a decent knowledge of the PnP rules to really understand how to build your character. Also, it’s the only one of the three that explicitly discourages modding.

If you don’t want very complex mechanics, don’t mind a structured class system you can’t change after character creation, can tolerate a lot of tedium, and enjoyed the prior game, Pillars of Eternity II is good. Mechanically, it is superior in most ways to the first one, and the characters are almost as good as DOS2 in terms of personality (though not always as likable).

Every campaign I’ve ever run or played in has the same problem: at some point the rules become so cumbersome on a turn-by-turn and operation-by-operation basis that everybody at the table is paying more attention to pushing modifiers around than they are to the scenario that actually happens at the table. At some point they even start forgetting what monster they were attacking partway through adding up their attack mods, and have to ask.

Moreover, the math itself is so unstable that it becomes near-impossible to build encounters that fairly challenge the whole party; often you’ll challenge one guy reasonably well, but then be in the territory where everybody else gets practically insta-killed. Result: levels 1–5 are good fun, levels 6–10 are tolerable but steadily less reliable and levels 10+ are varying grades of being unplayable.

It’s so disappointing, because the game becomes the least fun to play just when the story is getting the most interesting. Every time, no matter who’s DMing.

And don’t get me wrong

I really, really like the ideas behind Pathfinder. I like the idea of the details of your character’s fighting style mattering and being tangible gameplay, and I really enjoy both the Golarion campaign setting and Paizo’s adventure modules. Even they seem to know that the core rules inherited a lot of problems from the 3rd edition, though, and what’s more, they’ve definitely suffered growing pains as a result of the jank implementation of a lot of their most popular ideas. Since I got the hang of 5th edition, I’ve switched wholesale to it, and I’m a lot happier. It doesn’t do everything Pathfinder did that I liked, but it does 90% of everything so much more smoothly and competently and makes the process of developing custom content so much less of a hassle.

The second edition looks like it’s definitely a better game than the first edition. Time will tell if the second edition is actually a good enough game to do what the first edition has consistently failed at for me and my group, or if it just gets off the rails for different reasons. We need months before we’ve got a really clear idea about that, as we haven’t yet started a campaign with it. But I’ll certainly give it a shot.

Why is Pathfinder: Kingmaker’s portrayal of the Lawful Good alignment so wonky?

Because they didn’t use a matrix for alignment adjustment. Rather than having a cursory move on two axes: Law-Chaos and Good-Evil, they have 9 different cursor positions with every action moving you to one exact direction and away from the other 8 (more or less for true neutral).

As such it was basically impossible to stay Lawful Good by alternating Lawful Neutral and Neutral Good decisions. You HAVE to take Lawful Evil or Chaotic Good at times. Or they have to invent a bloodthirsty Lawful Good option that doesn’t make any real sense except balance neutral good character and lawful neutral ones.

Basically, because they played a weird version of classic D&D alignment rather than the more common and more sensible Axis way. In PF: KM taking lawful neutral action is not enough to stay good, they had to invent an Extrem LG alignment that confines to LE.
